The eight-second goldfish stat is fake — the scroll data underneath it isn't
Marketing decks have repeated for a decade that human attention span dropped to eight seconds, shorter than a goldfish's. It isn't true. BBC journalist Simon Maybin traced the figure in a 2017 investigation to an unverifiable source called "Statistic Brain" — not to Microsoft's actual 2015 Canada consumer report, and not to any peer-reviewed study. Building a program page around a number nobody can source is a wasted design brief.
What is measurable is scroll behaviour, and Nielsen Norman Group has measured it properly. Its eyetracking study of 120 participants and more than 130,000 fixations found that users spend roughly 57% of their viewing time above the fold, down from 80% in the lab's 2010 run of the same study, because people now scroll more readily than they used to. Even so, 74% of total viewing time still lands within the first two screenfuls of a page, around the top 2160px of scroll on a typical desktop viewport (Nielsen Norman Group, "Scrolling and Attention", published April 15, 2018).
For a Canadian school's program page, that is the real brief. An applicant scrolling through a Bachelor's or MBA program listing gives close to three-quarters of their attention to whatever loads in the first two screens. Applicants scan a program page, they don't read it
An applicant landing on a program page doesn't read it top to bottom — they scan it for a short list of facts. Nielsen Norman Group's research on reading patterns found that 79% of users scan a page rather than reading word by word, and only 16% read close to word-for-word (Nielsen Norman Group, "F-Shaped Pattern For Reading Web Content"). Eyes sweep horizontally near the top of a text block, drop down the left edge, and catch headings, bold labels and numbers along the way — not full sentences.
That's not carelessness; it's how anyone reads a page they haven't committed to. A prospective student comparing three programs across the OUAC portal, ApplyAlberta, and a private school's direct application in the same evening has no reason to read any single page in full before deciding it's worth the time. Paragraphs about "a transformative student experience" get skipped, because a scanning eye finds nothing in them to grab.
The practical result: a program page's decisive facts cannot live buried in prose. They need to sit where a scanning eye actually stops — headings, bold labels, short lists, the top-left of a content block. Tuition mentioned only in the third paragraph under "Why choose us" is effectively invisible to the 79% who never read it.

What has to survive the first two screenfuls
Given that 74% of attention lands in the first two screenfuls, a program page has to answer the questions that make or break a decision before most applicants ever scroll further. Five elements compete for that space, and on a well-built page all five get it.

None of these needs a full paragraph. A short label-and-value pair or a two-line summary block does more for a scanning eye than three sentences of context ever will. If a program page makes an applicant scroll past a hero video and a mission statement before reaching tuition, that figure is effectively invisible to three-quarters of visitors.
The deadline line carries extra weight in the Canadian cycle. Most provincial portals and direct applications open in October and close by January, offers arrive between February and April, and acceptance deadlines fall in May or June ahead of a September term start. An applicant scanning a program page in November needs to see, in the first two screenfuls, whether they're still inside that window — not find it three clicks deep on an admissions subpage.

Attention above the fold is only half the story; the other half is how fast people leave once they arrive. Chartbeat's analysis of engaged time across roughly 100,000 page visits on its publisher network over one week found that about 34% of visitors leave a page within 15 seconds of active engagement — scrolling, clicking, moving a mouse, or touching a screen (Chartbeat, "Using Engaged Time to Understand Your Audience"). That figure counts genuine interaction, not an idle tab left open in a background window, which makes it a better proxy for real interest than raw time-on-page.
Chartbeat's benchmarks also give a rough scale for what "enough time" looks like by content type: typical engaged time runs 5 to 30 seconds for landing pages, 60 to 90 seconds for news articles, and 3 or more minutes for long-form content.

Read against the 34% abandonment figure, a 20-second first impression is close to the norm for a program page, not an edge case. A page that also loads slowly compounds the problem — a heavy campus hero image can eat most of that 15-second window before an applicant has scanned a single fact, on a laptop in a dorm room or on a phone with patchy campus Wi-Fi.
