Leak point 1: the prospect who is never contacted
A meaningful share of prospects who start the process never finish a single step of it — not because they lost interest, but because nobody followed up before they moved on. Speed of first contact is not an education-specific finding — it comes from a cross-industry B2B sales study, so treat it as a directional signal rather than a sector benchmark. Researchers at MIT and Kellogg (Oldroyd), analysing three years of data across six companies, 15,000+ leads and 100,000+ call attempts for InsideSales.com, found that the odds of qualifying a lead drop 21-fold when the time to first contact goes from 5 minutes to 30 minutes.
The underlying mechanism is intuitive even outside sales: a prospect who has just submitted an enquiry is in an active decision-making state. The longer a provider waits to respond, the more that prospect has moved on to comparing other courses — often across state lines, since a prospect weighing a Melbourne college against a Sydney one is one open tab away from asking the other institution the same question. Leak point 3: the question that goes unanswered
Not every leak shows up as a missing contact — some prospects get a reply, but not the reply they needed. A prospect who asks a specific question about tuition, HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP eligibility, entry requirements or course accreditation and receives a generic course-guide link, or no answer at all, treats that as a signal the provider is not paying attention.
